Offered is an original British Royal Navy/Australian ship’s snuff mull or tobacco holder, in the form of a horses hoof, which has been fashioned and adorned in brass. The hoof is in excellent preserved condition, with the addition of a brass shoe to base and brass ‘periople’ and coronary band, showing brass polish residue to crevices. Above this is the brass lid, showing period engraving of CURACOA AUGUST 1ST 1891. The piece measures 83mm high x 160mm long and 120mm in width.
H.M.S. Curacoa was the Australian based Royal Nay Corvette, which was transferred to the Australian Station on the 5th August 1890. It was the ship which was sailed to and made famous for proclaiming the Solomon & Ellice Islands as being British Protectorates. This is a lovely and well preserved historical piece of both Australian & Nautical memorabilia.
