32mm wide circular brass medal with eyelet for ribbon suspension; the face with a view of oil storage tanks, derricks, pipeline, a tracked vehicle and, to the right, a hammer and sickle, circumscribed ‘ЗА ОСВОЕНИЕ НЕДР И РАЗВИТИЕ НЕФТЕГАЗОВОГО КОМПЛЕКСА ЗАПАДНОЙ СИБИРИ’ (For the Tapping of the Subsoil and Expansion of the Petrochemical Complex of Western Siberia), a five-pointed star at the base; the reverse with the letters ‘CCCP’ (for Sojus Sowjetskich Sozialistitscheskich Respublik = Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) imposed on a five-pointed star, point upwards and a rayed five-pointed star, point downwards, sprigs of oak and laurel at the base; on replaced correct ribbon and pentagonal hanger mounted for wear.

The medal was instituted on 28 July 1978 and awarded for at least three years’ distinguished service in the development of mineral resources and the oil and gas complex of Western Siberia. Only about thirty-eight thousand awards were made before it became obsolete with the break-up of the Soviet Union and the Medal is rare.
