James Waterhouse was commissioned temporary Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps on 19 February 1915, and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 9 July 1915. He was appointed Assistant Provisional Marshall on 19 May 1917, and subsequently served in Iraq and Mesopotamia. He transferred to the Reserve of Officers on 16 February 1922 and was removed having reached the age limit on 29 January 1929.
