32mm wide circular cupro-nickel medal on scroll and fixed ribbon bar suspension; the face with the crowned head of King George VI facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF:’ (George VI by the Grace of God King of Great Britain Defender of the Faith), signed ‘PM’ (for the sculptor Percy Metcalfe, CVO, RDI, 1895-1970) ; the reverse with a full-length classically-attired female figure allegorical of justice, a laurel wreath in her right hand, the scales of justice in her left hand, a truncheon laterally at the base, circumscribed ‘FOR EXEMPLARY POLICE SERVICE’, cruciform stylised lilies between each of the words, signed ‘E.C.R.P.’(for the sculptor and medallist Edward Carter Preston, 1885-1965); impressed named CONST. HARRY L SHIPP, on original ribbon.

The medal was instituted on 14 June 1951 to be awarded for twenty-two years’ service in a United Kingdom constabulary. King George VI died on 6 February 1952 and the medal was thus awarded with his image for only a short time before being replaced with that of Queen Elizabeth II.
