This is a genuine 1866 Pattern Chassepot sword/bayonet & scabbard. The bayonet features rivetted all brass ribbed grips, with the locking lug (working). Metal quillion and muzzle ring showing issue numbers & manufacturer/acceptance stamps. Single edged 58cm long ‘Yataghan’ curved blade in excellent condition. The spine shows the engraved details for the manufacturer (Manufacture Nationale de Chatellerault *third republic signature*) and date for September 1870 (the year of the Franco-Prussian War). The metal scabbard is in very good, sound condition, with some light/use wear. Slides in and out of of scabbard with no issues, with that tell tale ‘click’. The bayonet is in overall good to very good condition.
Measures 71 cm overall. This was the bayonet used in conjunction with the 1866 bolt action Chassepot service rifle.
