23RD ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS CRIMEAN WAR MEDAL 3173 SERGEANT OLIVER JONES PRE WW1

Offered is a Crimea Medal (1854 -56), with 3 clasps, ALMA INKERMAN, SEBASTOPOL, depot impressed named NO. 3173. SERGT. OLIVER. JONES. 23RD R.W. FUSILIERS. With original ribbon and silver rinbband buckle. Medal comes with extract British Army Worldwide Index 1851 and medal rolls.

Sergeant Oliver Jones appears on the British Army Worldwide Index 1851 with the rank of Private. The battalion was stationed in England prior to the Crimea War. It served in the Crimea from 1854 - 1856 and was present at the Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol, Jones appears on the rolls as a Corporal, however he was promoted to Sergeant when the medal was issued to him.

At the conclusion of the Crimean War, the regiment also fought in the Second China War (1856-50), before taking part in the relief of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). A search of the medal rolls and pension records have found no further traces of Jones with the 23rd. It is possible that he transferred to another unit after the Crimean War.
