Original 1878-1880 Afghanistan Campaign medal awarded to Private Wigglesworth, who served with the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Fusiliers (Late 7th Foot). 36mm wide circular silver medal with claw and ribbon bar suspension, with campaign bar ‘KANDAHAR’ the face with the veiled crowned head and shoulders of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX (Victoria Queen and Empress); the reverse with a column on the march in a mountainous landscape, an elephant bearing a cannon to the fore, circumscribed above ‘AFGHANISTAN’ and dated ‘1878-79-80’ below. Correct chisel engraved named in running script to 2122 PTE B WIGGLESWORTH 2/7TH FOOT; on original ribbon....

Small edge knock at 7 O'Clock. The medal was instituted on 19 March 1881 to be awarded to participants in the Second Afghan War of 1878 to 1880.

The 2/7th Regiment of Foot served under Sir Frederick Roberts V.C., being engaged in action, 1st September 1880 and also granted to those who took part in the reconnaissance of the city, 31 August 1880, but who did not take part in the attack the next day.
