Peter Rone was born in Stalybridge, Cheshire January 1848, and attested for the 14th Foot at Bradford, in June 1876. He was discharged 24 May 1881, having served 4 years and 331 days with the Colours.

The Medal was instituted on 19 March 1881 to be awarded to participants in the Second Afghan War of 1878 to 1880.
