Offered is an original New Zealand 1845 - 66 Campaign Medal, as awarded to Srrgeant John Walker, who served with the 68th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot.

Medal features a 36mm wide circular silver medal with claw and swivel ribbon bar decorated with New Zealand fern fronds; the face with the veiled head of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed ‘VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:’ (Victoria by the Grace of God Queen of Great Britain, Defender of the Faith); the reverse with dates 1864 TO 1866 centrally within a laurel wreath, circumscribed ‘NEW ZEALAND VIRTUTIS HONOR’ (New Zealand Bravery Honour); attributed on the edge to 4126 SERGT JOHN WALKER, 68TH LT INFTY.; with some light edge bruises and remnants of brooch mounts; on correct ribbon. The Medal was instituted in 1869 and awarded to surviving members of the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and colonial volunteers for service in the New Zealand Wars of 1845 to 1847 and 1860 to 1866.

John Walker was born in the Parish of Loughgall, Armagh, and enlisted at Armagh for the 68th Regiment on 23 June 1855, aged 16 years 5 months, a weaver by trade. He served at Malta 5 months, Ionian Islands 1 year 1 month, East Indies 11 years 7 months, and New Zealand 2 years 5 months. He served ‘in the field’ in New Zealand in Captain S Graces Company from February 1864 to March 1866, and was present at Gate Pah. He was discharged in the rank of Sergeant on 16 April 1878, on termination of his second period of engagement. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll entry.
