James Harold Waters was from Toodyay and enlisted on the 16th January 1915, aged 29 years. He was allotted into ‘B’ Company, as part of the 4th Reinforcements into the 11th Battalion. He landed at Anzac Cove on the 4th of June 1915. He is listed as Killed in Action on the 1st of August, having been killed as part of Captain Leane’s bayonet charge against the Turkish forces at 10pm the previous evening, the Turks having dug in perilously close to the 12th Battalion positions, being one of 200 men in the attack, of which one officer & 36 men were killed and 73 others were wounded. Given that most of the men of the 11th Battalion were sick from dysentery and illness, this was one of the most courageous attacks carried out by the 11th during the campaign.
