Comes with copy of service and discharge rolls, service papers and research. Joseph Joyce was an Englishman born in 1866, a butcher/storeman by trade he emigrated to South Africa in 1896. He enlisted ‘C’ Squadron Rhodesian Regiment (service no. 156) 16/8/99 and served with them in Rhodesia, Transvaal and was at the Relief of Mafeking, discharging at Pretoria time expired 15/10/1900. After a couple of weeks break, he enlisted with the 2nd Brabant’s Horse (20161) and fought Cape Colony and Orange Free State with them until discharging time expired 17/5/1901. After a short break, he enlisted with the Prince of Wales Light Horse (34414) 13/6/1901 discharging time expired 16/12/01, the usual break and on the 4/2/1902 enlisted with the 3rd New South Wales Imperial Bushmen Contingent (3024) at Cape town serving with them until discharging 11/7/02, which was the day before the unit departed for Australia. Joyce must have been an accomplished soldier as he served with 4 units that had a good reputation as scouts/bushmen. He was also entitled to the Queens South Africa Medal (1899 -1902) with clasps, Relief of Mafeking, (as he is entitled to the clasp Relief of Mafeking, he is not entitled to the clasp Rhodesia, this was only issued to troops who did not have the Relief clasp.) Transvaal, Cape Colony, Orange Free State.
