33mm wide circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the head and shoulders portrait of King D. Luís I in military uniform, facing left, circumscribed ‘D. LUIZ I REI DE PORTUGAL’ (Don Luis I King of Portugal), dated ‘1863’ below, and signed ‘F . A . C .’; the reverse inscribed ‘COMPORTAMENTO EXEMPLAR’ (Exemplary Conduct) within a circular laurel wreath, circumscribed ‘MEDALHA MILITAR’ (Military Medal); age toned overall, on correct ribbon with ribband buckle. The medal was instituted on 2 October 1863 in three classes, each with three grades. It was replaced in 1910 with the abolition of the Portuguese monarchy. We have been told that this is the naval version of the medal.
