Offered is a 1910 dated U.S. Army presentation sword, as awarded to Colonel Murton A. Cheesman, who served as the commanding officer of the Bristol Train of Artillery, a local militia unit, whose lineage stretched back to the American War of Independence. This 1902 Infantry Pattern US Army Officers Sword features a gilt plated pierced guard, plain back-strap and decorated pommel, with good toning overall to the gilt finish. The horn grip is free of dents and chipping, retaining excellent graining to finish. This 1902 Infantry Pattern US Army Officers Sword features a gilt plated pierced guard, plain back-strap and decorated pommel, with good toning overall to the gilt finish. The horn grip is free of dents and chipping, retaining excellent graining to finish. The 77cm shallow curved, spear point blade shows beautiful etchings of foliate patterns with US Eagle & Military Drum, Swords, Cannon & Flags centre pieces. The left hand blade is named ‘COL. Merton A. Cheesman’, the right blade engraved ‘BRISTOL TRAIN OF ARTILLERY’. Single fullered unsharpened blade is slightly curved and in very fine condition, retaining manufacturers details for Harding Uniforms & Regalia, Boston, Mass.

The nickel scabbard is excellent, with 2 plain loose hanger rings and decorative gilt finished horseshoe pattern drag and decorative gilt suspension mounts. The left side of the scabbard has hand engraved trophies of arms and filigree pattern designs running 45cm in length, the same side with presentation engraved details ‘Presented to Col. Merton A. Cheesman BY HIS FRIENDS IN THE A. & B. A. Co. Oct. 2nd 1910’. Overall length 93cm.

Colonel Frederick Samuel Barlin was born on 2/11/1840 in London. He was involved in the tobacco industry being a Freeman of the City of London. He initially obtained a commission in the Army 4/11/1864 being posted to the 30th Regiment but shortly after resigned. He enlisted into the 3rd East Surrey (1st Royal Surrey Militia) as a Lieutenant in March 1866. Promoted to Captain November 1867 and Major in May 1887. He retired in June 1887 with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. He died on 21/6/1909 in his home in France.
