RARE WW1 GERMANY KINGDOM OF SAXONY CROSS OF HONOUR SERVICE MEDAL
Offered is an original German Kingdom of Saxony Cross of Honour award.
Features a 38mm wide gilt bronze urdy cross with stippled arms, with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing the crowned cipher of King Albert; the reverse with a circular central medallion with a crowned escutcheon bearing the arms of Saxony within a circular oak wreath; on an original ribbon.
The Cross was instituted by King Albert on 31 January 1876 as the ‘Allgemeines Ehrenzeichen’ (General Honour Award) to reward and recognise praiseworthy acts or associated meritorious achievements (‘zur Belohnung und Anerkenning’ für ‘rühmliche Handlungen’ oder ‘außerordentliche verdienstliche Leistungen’). On 18 October 1907, the name of the award was changed to the Ehrenkreuz (Honour Cross). It was suppressed at the end of World War 1.
