Corporal David Campbell was born 1890 at Dalry, Ayreshire. A carpenter/joiner by trade, he joined the 1/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers 16/12/1912 (service no 7704). They landed Mudros 3/6/1915 and then on to Gallipoli, landing 7/6/1915. On 20/12/1915 the 155th Brigade attacked Turkish positions at Krithia Nulla, the 1/4th R.S.F were providing carrying parties to support the attack. The bombardment by the Turks was heavy and as a result of the action and Turkish artillery fire, the battalion suffered 20 casualties (1 killed & 1 died of wounds), Campbell being one of them suffering a gun shot wound to his elbow. Evacuated to the Hospital Ship 'Assay' and departed the Gallipoli 23/12/1915.

Perhaps as a result of his wound he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was employed as a carpenter. Being promoted to Acting Sergeant 1/12/1918 and discharging to the reserve 21/4/1919 to live in Dalry.
