Offered is a WW1 German Iron Cross First Class. This piece was made during the First World War, having the tell tale owner scratch engraved details to the reverse. The cross features a black enamel core centre, showing very light service wear with central 'W' motif for King Wilhelm II (the last Kaiser of Germany), the date 1914 to base (the first year of the war) and the royal crown atop. The piece is the flat variety, with thich spear pin and hook to reverse, with the engraved details 4. IV. 17 HOHEIOSO or HOHE 1050. The makers mark F. R. (Freidlander of Berlin) is stamped to the base of the hook. The cross arms measure 44 mm across. These were prized pieces, and as such, the recipient has obviously chosen to mark the heroic event in which he won the award by engraving the action details & date to reverse, more than likely 'in the field'. A lovely, well used, toned silver cross.
