This ‘screw back’ variety was made during the First World War, being the screw back ‘private purchase’ variety for affixing to the uniform via the twin screws to rear. The cross features a black enamel core centre, showing service wear with central ‘W’ motif for King Wilhelm II (the last Kaiser of Germany), the date 1914 to base (the first year of the war) and the royal crown atop. The cross arms measure 43.5 mm across. These were prized pieces, as they could be affixed through the service uniform and worn in the field, without the chance of the badge falling off. A lovely, well used, toned silver cross.
