Offered is an exceptionally good condition WW1 enlisted Prussian Dragoons Curassier. This lovely piece retains the 1 piece grey metal dragoons helmet plate, with early war detailed features. The plate is affixed to the ‘blued’ steel shell, which retains nearly all of it’s original blueing, to all sides, including the scalloped ‘lobster tail’ rear skirt. I can only see one or two light scratches and no dents, which shows the care taken by the original wearer and recent owners of this magnificent piece. The original cockades look to have been repainted some time ago and have the original chinstrap with twin buckles firmly attached. The plain cruciform base retains the removeable ventilated spike and bayonet striker top. The domed rivets are all present and hold all the metal features firmly in place. The original black leather liner is in very good, supple condition, with all fingers tied together. The front underside skirt retains much of the original green paint finish and rear skirt is stamped 55 (size) and unit stamped 8. J. P. (8TH Jäger zu Pferde Regiment). The maker stamp of Helbing & Sackewitz. As the pictures and descriptions show, this is a gem of a helmet, one in fantastic condition, which is generally not the case with these 100 year old pieces. This is an estate piece purchased here in Western Australia from a long standing local collector & dealer.
(The 8th Regiment was formed in 1913 and was based in Trier in the Rhineland not far from the boarder with France. The regiment was deployed to France in 1914 and then to the Eastern Front in 1915 where it was assigned tasks including patrol, security, and intelligence gathering.)
