R.N.R. James Ernest George Jones was born in Plymouth, Devon, in July 1898. He enlisted at the age of 18 at Plymouth 19th September 1914 and served during the Great War with the Royal Engineers on the Western Front from 5 July 1915 with the 18th (Eastern Division) Signal Company. Included is a copy of his service record (burnt record type). After the war he was employed as a fisherman, and also joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Milford Haven in February 1924. James Ernest George Jones was born in Plymouth, Devon, in July 1898. He enlisted at the age of 18 at Plymouth 19th September 1914 and served during the Great War with the Royal Engineers on the Western Front from 5 July 1915 with the 18th (Eastern Division) Signal Company. Included is a copy of his service record (burnt record type).

After the war he was employed as a fisherman, and also joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Milford Haven in February 1924. He was awarded his R.N.R. L.S. & G.C. medal in 1939.

Jones was mobilised as an Engineman with the outbreak of the Second World War, and after postings to Chatham and H.M.S. Eaglet at Liverpool, he was posted to the trawler Lady Beryl in October 1939. He served with her on anti-submarine duties in the Irish Sea and the North Sea, before transferring with her to operate from the Orkney Islands in July 1943. Jones went with the Lady Beryl to operate out of Trinidad in June 1944. He was demobilized in December 1945.
