WW2 RAAF medal group to Flying Officer Vary, a 40 mission Bomb Aimer veteran. Group includes original court mounted as worn 1939-45 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with France & Germany bar (un-named as issued), Defence Medal, War Medal & A.S.M. 1939-45 (last 3 named 421647 T. L. VARY.). Group comes with a padded Observer wing, Returned Services badge, dog tag and Identity Card. Flying Officer Thomas Lockhart Vary was born 5th June 1911 in Toowoomba, enlisted for service into the R.A.A.F. 28th February 1942 in Sydney, serving with 466 Squadron on operations from 15th March 1944 to 12th August 1944, completing 40 missions as a bomb aimer, mainly aboard Halifax LV904. Discharged 4th October 1945. Very unlucky not to have received a D.F.C. for so many missions. Between December 1942 and May 1945, 466 Squadron flew 3,326 sorties against 269 separate targets. It dropped 8,804 tons of bombs and laid 442 tons of mines. In the course of these operations 81 aircraft were lost.
