Offered for sale is a good example of an 1870’s era 1821 Pattern Light Cavalry Sword, retailed by Lush & Co. of Melbourne

The guard features a three bar all nickel hilt, with original fish skin grip (showing wear to top ‘small finger’ area), with full wire wrap as standard and metal back strap, showing a period dark brown finish to all guard & scabbard metal parts. This is not the usual aged rust pattern, but upon close inspection a heavily toned brown enamel finish, most likely applied for campaigning.

89 cm slightly curved blade is in remarkably good condition for its age, with most of the original nickel finish remaining to face. The engravings are very sharp and show trophies of arms, floral designs, cavalry cuirass, cannons & flags to both sides of the blade. There Australian retailer is present to ricasso for Lush & Co. Melbourne, opposite side shows proof star and gold slug, with the top spine showing the manufacturer stamp 'REEVES', meaning this sword was made by Reeves & Greaves of Birmingham, who were well known for making cavalry swords for the British Army and who obviously supplied this and other swords to the colonial Australian market. The scabbard retains its twin floating suspension rings and large style drag. The scabbard is in excellent condition, showing the toned brown enamel overall, with a couple of white enamel splotches to lower portion. Overall length: 107cm

This is an exceptionally well made sword, which has obviously stood the test of time. Rarely will you see a colonial Australian era sword come up for sale.
