Thomas Alfred Heywood was born in Salford, Lancashire in June 1898. He enlisted into the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers (Bantam Battalion) with the service number 21827. Thomas Alfred Heywood was born in Salford, Lancashire in June 1898. He enlisted into the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers (Bantam Battalion) with the service number 21827. The Battalion was formed in Salford, 23/3/1915. It landed in France 30/1/1916 and was disbanded 16/2/1918.

It is unknown when he was posted to the Labour Corps, possibly when the 20th was disbanded, he was given the service number 113526 (this number block was allocated to the 190th Labour Company), he was further posted to the 15th Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, with the new service number 64682.

The 15th Battalion was formed on 11/6/1918. He was posted yet again to the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment with yet another service number of 89970. It was with the 2nd Manchesters that he served with in Iraq.

He continued to serve with the Manchesters when they were re numbered post war and received his final service number 3514023.

The 1939 census records him working as a rubber calenderer (Calendering is a process which is employed to produce very high quality seamless rolls of rubber with extremely consistent thickness and density) in Salford.

WW2: He re enlisted 18/7/1940 into the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, discharging 5/10/1945. He died in 1970 at Barton, Lancashire.
