Leading Seaman Herbert Pybus was born on the 6th January 1897 in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire, being the eldest son of Hunter & Sussanah Pybus. He enlisted as a Boy Sailor 12th June 1913. Served HMS Ganges II, Royal Arthur & spend the majority of the war on the Dreadnought H.M.S. Erin (15th April 1915 to 21st December 1919) being present at the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. He served post war, receiving his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on the 26th March 1930. Herbert died in London in March 1969.

Interestringly, H.M.S. Erin was originally built in response to an order placed by the Ottoman government with the British Vickers company. She was intended, when accepted for service in the Ottoman Navy, to be named Reşadiye, as the first of two Reşadiye-class battleships. Upon completion she was commandeered by the Admiralty for Royal Navy service, causing the Ottoman government to furiously respond by joining sides with the German & Austrian forces in fighting the Allied forces from November 1914 til their defeat in October 1918.
