Leading Stoker John Sullivan was born in Kilgarvan, Ireland in 1882. He served in the Royal Navy and transferred over to the newly created Royal Australian Navy in 1912 for a period of 3 years, being a commissioned sailor for the Town Class Cruiser H.M.A.S. Melbourne.
