George Oliver Oxley was born on 6/12/1894 at Sunderland, Durham. He was serving with the Northumbrian Divisional Cyclist Company (service no 895) when he landed in France on 7/8/1915. Each Division had a cyclist company for scouting and as messengers. At a later stage he transferred to the Royal Engineers and was given the new number 198619 and later WR175216. He served with the Railway Operating Division, this was mainly composed of pre-war railway employees and operated both standard gauge and narrow-gauge railways.

In 1939 he was living in York working as a Railway Engine Driver. He died in Yorkshire 1977.
